Let me just share what I've read.
Why do we forget?
Have you ever heard yourself saying things like this : "I forget!" , "I don't remember it at all!" or "Why it is hard to remember?". Our concentration and focus is related with our memories. If we find it difficult to remember something or simply just being forgetful is because we rarely used the information we stored in our brain. It is not easy to remember things that we do not focus on just like we would have to give full attention during our lesson in class, it is difficult to remember things that we don't even want to remember what more things that we're not interested to know!
The factors
Lacking of focus and concentration, not interested, day-dreaming or fantasizing whilst reading/ doing something, or it happened so long ago and are not repeated.
The Techniques
There are a few techniques given here in the book on how to make your mind be more effective.
1. 'Chunking' Technique
Collecting a few unrelated information and form it into a familiar group. For example, the 26 letters.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
If we read it separately, it has 26 chunk. Well, during pre-school, they teach us to sing the ABC song. Remember? It goes :
ABCDEFG, HIJKLMN, OPQRSTU, VWXYZ
From 26 chunk, we made it to 4 chunk. This will enable us to store information in a short term memory because the average chunk that can be received by our mind is 7 to 9.
Other example : our IC no. (890123-14-1234) or bank acc. no. (12-345-67890-12)
2. Combination of First Letter Technique
This is easy. How do you remember the colors of the rainbow?
Michael Jackson Kena Halau Balik India Utara
Other example : SMS (Short Message Service), MMS
3. Imagination Technique
I give you a situation. Read this :
A rat wearing a black hat eating carrot while lying on bed with an elephant who is reading a book about Cinderella trying to cut a cake using an axe.
I'm pretty sure you are trying to imagine the situation to have a better understanding on the text, right? It's just like when we're reading the newspaper, the incidents and all. But remember, the funnier you imagine, the easier to keep the information.
4. Keywords technique
This can be use for unfamiliar terms such as Klaustrophobia, Hydrophobia, Haemophobia. Phobia means that 'afraid of something'. Then, it'll be easier. We can relate 'hydro' to water and 'haemo' to haemoglobin (blood). Hence, the words hydrophobia and haemophobia describing afraid of water and afraid to blood respectively.
And a few other techniques that am lazy to write it here..Mind-Mapping, Location, Diagram techniques..
In a NutShell
Any information can only be received through a conscious mind. The success in remembering or storing too much information will sometimes makes us lazy to use our brain for thinking. As we can't depend solely on memories, we are force to think!
Everyone can talks on today's weather, yet we can do nothing about it (suddenly talking bout the weather =P). There's not much we can do to change the raining day but there's a lot of way we can take to change our weak mind. The most important thing is to develop a positive ATTITUDE!
********************
"For each (person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah. Verily! Allah will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah). But when Allah wills a peoples punishment, there can be no turning back of it, and they will find besides Him no protector."
